2012 ‘Dash” to Chula Vista: Day 2

A cool and overcast day with light wind awaited competitors and their companion sailors for the leg back to Harbor Island.

That was not enough to temper the enthusiasm and the second part of the “Dash” to Chula Vista was another success, prompting the Chula Vista Yacht Club race committee to announce that 2012 was officially the first annual “Dash”

Another big thank you to the Chula Vista Yacht Club, the California Yacht Marina and all the volunteers who made the event possible.

And let’s not forget the Venetian Point Loma who supplied delicious pizzas for the after race party

2010 Martin 16 High Point Championship Series: And the Winner is…

The 2010 Martin 16 High Point championship series concluded with a 3 race regatta on December 18th. It was the last of the 2010 High Point series so those in contention for the overall championship braved the cold (almost wet) weather and raced 3 races in good breezes to include one long course and two shorter ones. At the end of the day, the 3 race regatta was won by Tammy Airhart with her companion Steve Edenson.

For the Series, Sue Taetzsch was the frontrunner going in to the day with 27 points. Following behind Sue were Tammy Airhart with 19 points, Rob Goldberg with 17 points, Judy Kowalski with 15 points, Ahmet Ustunel at 14 points and Loch Crane with 10. At the end of the day, Tammy and Steve combined their skills to pull into the lead and capture the Championship. Congratulations, Tammy!

Maybe the real champion of the day though was Judy Kowalski who opted to provide the great food for the Christmas party instead of racing, even though she was positioned to move to the lead if she had raced well the last day. Thank you Judy.

Since none of this racing can be done without our volunteer companions, we decided to crown the champion of the companions for 2010 also. We did the math to determine the champion companion using the High Point scoring system and guess what? There isn’t one; there are two. Doug Shaw and Steve Edenson tied with 28 points each. But, since there can be only one Champion, I used US Sailing’s method for breaking Series ties and the win goes to Steven, but it was really close. Going into the last day Doug was the clear leader, but then Steven and Tammy scored one second place and two firsts giving Steven the tie-break win. The method to break the tie is whoever has the most first places; then if that’s even, the most second places and so on down until the tie is broken. The tie was broken with Steven having four 1st places; Doug had two. Congratulations to both Doug and Steve – you guys are both awesome!

The first regatta of 2011 is scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd, so be sure to mark your calendars now. The complete schedule of the 2011 championship series is shown below. As you can see, your best chance of being the year’s champion is participation!!

Thanks to all of you for participating in our regattas this year. I hope you all had as much fun racing as we did staging the events.
